Roscrea’s Businesses Support Fairtrade Campaign
A number of businesses in Roscrea were recently presented with certificates at a special presentation evening showing their support of Fairtrade by supplying and serving fairtrade products to the public. The meeting was addressed by Mr. John Nuguwabaga, Manager of a Co-Op in Uganda. John spoke about Fair Trade and what can be achieved regarding school buildings etc when reasonable prices etc are agreed.

Fairtrade labelling is a rapidly growing international system which seeks to guarantee a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world.

Fairtrade Mark Ireland is the Independent certification body in Ireland that awards the FAIRTRADE Mark to products which meet fairtrade standards.

In Ireland sales of Fairtrade certified products grew by over 75% in 2006 and strong growth is continuing.

Marian Hayes AIB bank was delighted to accept Fair Trade certification for the Roscrea branch of the AIB
Grants Hotel who have agreed to serve only fairtrade tea and coffee were the first establishment to come on board, followed by Fayre Days Coffee shop, Tesco, Harvest Health Food Store, Lidl, and Bernies Super Valu.

These businesses were followed this spring by Roscrea Credit Union, Roscrea 2000, The Methodist Church and the Roscrea Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association.

The Fairtrade committee hope that as many as possible of the local businesses will follow suit in the near future and therefore increase Roscrea’s chances of being designated as a Fairtrade town early in the New Year.
