The wet weather did nothing to dampen the great celebrations at Mount St Joseph last weekend as the monastery celebrated the blessing of Dom Richard Purcell who at the age of thirty three is now Ireland’s youngest abbot.

Dom Richard Purcell is congratulated by Sr Joseph Emmanuel Williams and Helen Williams, a niece of Sr Joseph, after the ceremony in which he received the abbatial blessing from Bishop Willie Walsh in the Cistercian Abbey in Roscrea, Co Tipperary. Dom Richard is the eight Abbot of the monastery.
The abbatial blessing was performed by Bishop Willie Walsh during mass at the Abbey on Saturday last. Dom Purcell who comes from Rathgar, Co Dublin, is only the eight Abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey and succeeds Dom Kevin Daly, who had been Abbot since 2003.

Dom Purcell entered the Abbey in 1997 after completing his third level education at UCD. In 2002 he read theology at St Benet’s Hall, Oxford and when he returned to Mount St Joseph’s in 2004 he was appointed the abbey bursar. In 2005 there was great celebrations when he was ordained a priest. We wish Dom Purcell every success in his new role.
