Our end of year Mass this year was a very special celebration. The theme of the Mass was ‘Who do we count on’, with references throughout the evening to the television game show ‘Deal or no Deal’.

Last year ‘Senior club member of the year’ Maria Phelan welcomed people at the beginning of Mass. In her opening words she stressed how Junior & Senior committee rely on each other for support, advice and fun. She also stressed the importance of our annual holiday to Ballybunion, ‘it’s the best holiday ever’.

These words were re-echoed in the opening reflection by Thomas Cashin. He also stated ‘I think its time to give back to the club what was given to me as a junior member’. Then, throughout the mass both Junior/Senior Committee read commentorys / reflections showing just how much they work together.

In his homily Fr. Lorcan stressed how this mass had a simple, yet vital theme ‘who can we count on’. He told the story of how the club took the junior members to Hannah Montana film in the cinema. The girls were thrilled to go – the boys, well not so much! However the important lesson from the film was to be true to yourself. He asked the young people present to do three things, 1 Count on yourself – believe in yourselves. 2 Count on the solid, positive people in you life. 3 Count on God.

He said ‘Our community has had such sadness lately and being a good person in no protection that bad things won’t happen to us. But when we know who t count on, then we become a person people can count on. We need each other even more than before, especially these days. What followed was an offertory commentary where four red boxes were brought to the alter.

Opening the boxes they contained a mirror with the word ‘team’ representing the senior club, a picture of boys and girls representing junior club with the word ‘fun’ a heart representing our family and friends and lastly a picture of the senior committee, which held the word ‘together’. These ideas were later highlighted again in a communion reflection by David McNamara and Sinead Rowan. They wrote it’s nice to know we can count on the club and the committee; it’s even nicer to know they can count on us.

Lastly, Fr. Lorcan thanked the young people. ‘Quite simply you’re great’ he said and you the best thing Roscrea has going for it. He thanked the Junior committee for their loyalty and time given to the club. He said ‘we have a super junior committee and we rely on each other to make a difference down here’. He then presented each Senior Committee with a small gift. It was a way of thanking them as a committee for their dedication, caring and commitment to the young people of Roscrea. ‘You’re second to none’ Fr. Lorcan said and it’s an honour to work with you. The mass concluded in a spirit of celebration and great joy.

Eileen Shanahan (Club Secretary) was then called forward to present the Junior and Senior club members of the year. Meggie Fitzgerald was chosen from Junior Club and Thomas Cashin form Senior club. We are very proud of both members, chosen for their helpfulness and positive attitude.
In thanking Fr. Lorcan, Andrew Walsh commented that Fr. Lorcan was there for us all, in good times and bad, he is there with his wisdom and advice; let it be members, committee or members of the community. We thank Fr. Lorcan on behalf of all of us in the Youth Centre and we are happy to have you as our friend.
The night concluded with a disco for the children and tea/refreshments for the adults. The atmosphere that night was so positive and it showed our club at it finest and how to make a difference to the young people in our community.
