The sunny weather brought lots of visitors to many of Roscrea’s fantastic heritage sites on Sunday last to celebrate the start of “national Heritage Week”. The visitors were admitted free to Roscrea Castle and the Damer House complex where they were treated to a traditional seisiún on the Castle Lawn by members of Roscrea Comhaltas. Visitors to Roscrea on Sunday last also enjoyed guided tours of Roscrea Castle, Damer House and The Black Mills.

As part of the day’s events the acclaimed Roscrea historian George Cunningham gave an illustrated talk on the heritage of local books both antiquarian and modern. Over one hundred books and archival items were also on display much to the delight of the audience. The talk ranged from most of the known examples of works by and about Roscrea authors to little known items such as the Sale of Roscrea in 1858. The illustrated talk took place in the newly refurbished Damer Annexe and Senior Guide at Roscrea Heritage, Daphne Hastings thanked all those that attended on behalf of the OPW who hosted the event.
