The 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Christian Brothers in Roscrea was commemorated on Friday last. Proceedings commenced with a Mass in St. Cronan’s Church, with past pupil priests concelebrating. Roscrea Community choir sang at the Mass and past pupil, Mr.Adrian Hewson, recalled his many memories of the school.

A number of past teachers of the CBS, Roscrea gathered in the Damer Court Hotel on Friday last for the launch of a new book by Liam Doran to celebrate the 50th anniversary since the school was founded in Roscrea.

Students from the first class that ever entered the CBS, Roscrea in September 1961 were delighted to be part of the school reunion which took place on Friday last.

Afterwards in Damer Court Hotel, “Lest We Forget: A Roscrea C.B.S. Anthology” was launched. The book is edited by Liam Doran, one of the school’s first Leaving Cert. students. Mr. Michael Smith, former Minister for Defense, officially launched the book and Roscrea junior and senior Comhaltas provided music. M.C. was Tadhg Maher who did a fine job as always.

Great credit must go to Liam Doran and his committee for organsing what proved to be a very successful occasion. Past pupils, teachers and friends of the CBS were delighted to be in attendance for such a historic occasion. Past Brothers, such as Br Pat Madigan, Br Donal Blake, Br Donovan were also in attendance. The book is a credit to Liam and has received great praise. Featuring 128 pages the book is packed with memories of the school and photos of times past. In the earlier part of the book, Bro Donal Blake recalls how the CBS was established in Roscrea while Liam Doran delves into school life in the early days with a number of interesting articles.

Seamus Doherty recalls his memories of the school as does Thomas Deegan, Sean Ahearne and Paul Maher. John Gunnell wishes the CBS a happy 50th while Ger Scully evokes memories of the school’s first transition year. Bro Larry Nevin recalls the final years while Brian King reflects on the 90’s generation. Liam Doran writes about the CBS Olympian and former principal the first and last lay principal of the school, Colin Roddy, brings the curtain down on the book which is a fitting end to a remarkable anthology. Well done to Liam and all the committee on a wonderful achievement. No doubt the book will be cherished for many years to come. A limited number ids available locally.
