The 25th People of the Year evening tool place recently. The Guest of guest of honour was County Manager, Joe McGrath.

As always the evening commenced at 7.30pm with a concert from Roscrea Comhaltas. With so many County, Munster and All-Ireland champions in their ranks, this year’s concert was extra special. Following the concert, the organsier of the Roscrea People Awards and local historian, George Cunningham, conducted his annual illustrated presentation. This year’s theme will be “Aspects Of Roscrea”.

For the past twenty five years, George and Roscrea People have made a book presentation to St Cronan’s Services and Roscrea Library. Indeed it is worth mentioning that the heritage collection donated to Roscrea Library over the past twenty five years is now in excess of 3,500 volumes. In addition, Roscrea People selects a different school each year for a presentation which has added significantly to the resources in the respective schools. Once again this year, both St Cronan’s and Roscrea Library were presented with books and the school chosen this year was Coolderry National School. The school recently opened a new library called the “Pat Carroll Memorial Library”.

Once the book presentations were complete the awards ceremony commenced. The recipients this year included Roscrea Tennis Club who received an award in recognition of their new facilities on the Dublin Road and staying on the sporting front, Marjorie McCorduck received an award to celebrate her election as President of the Irish Ladies’ Golfing Union, 2011-2012. Roscrea Youth Projects NTLP and their coordinator Deirdre Cahir received an award for many years of commitment, care and concern. The international award this year went to Kevin Carroll whose work in the USA helped inspire the Hollywood mega movie, Dolphin Tale.

Four citations were awarded this year. A Roscrea People citation is in recognition of an individual/organsation that has already received a Roscrea People Award. Cian Hanamy, All-Ireland fleadh Cheoil Winner received a citation as did Roscrea Scouts who celebrated forty years of service in 2011. The Dean Maxwell Centre received a citation in recognition of the truly magnificent publication of The Wisdom of Age; with acknowledgement to Mary Arrigan, writer, Brian Redmond, photographer, Timmy Quinlan, designer and Des Walsh, Walsh Printers. The final citation was awarded to local poet, musician and singer/songwriter, Seamus Doran who successfully composed and published the words and music for “Lead Me Home” a full mass that received plenty of recognition in 2011.
Well done to all.
The event was sponsored by Super Valu Roscrea, Roscrea Credit Union and Frank Murray.
