Oxfam launches Fairtrade Exhibition in RoscreaThe development agency, Oxfam, will open its Fairtrade exhibition this week in Roscrea Library, aimed at showing Irish consumers how they can make a difference to the lives of millions of workers in the developing world.
The exhibition entitled 'SMALL CHANGE, BIG DIFFERENCE' shows, with images and commentary from producers themselves, the necessity for Fairtrade and the benefits it brings to some of the poorest people in the world and how ordinary people can make a difference through buying Fairtrade goods with the Fairtrade Mark.
This is a chance for people to see what they can do to help poverty amongst producers in the developing world. A small change can make a big difference with Fairtrade says Rebecca Emery, Fairtrade Education Officer with Oxfam Ireland. Millions of people in the poorest countries depend on producing products such as tea, coffee and bananas for a living. Often this involves long hours of backbreaking labour, in hot or dangerous conditions, with the only result grinding poverty, inadequate housing, little or no health care or education.
A recent report by Oxfam showed how important Fairtrade is. The world price of coffee has slumped by more than 70 per cent in the last four years putting millions of livelihoods in the developing world at risk. From a jar of coffee worth three pounds producers can now get less than 30 cents. Through Fairtrade ordinary people can ensure that these producers get a better deal and are paid enough to live on. The exhibition opens on February 5th and will run until the end of the month.
