Many enterprises in the town - Miza Ireland, Glanbia, Roscrea Chamber of Commerce, Roscrea Musical Society and the Roscrea Credit Union - sponsored awards and this lent an added importance to the occasion, when their representstives attended the ceremony to present their particular award.
Sixth Year students received their awards following their graduation on 24th May. First up was Damien McKelvey, who won two awards - one for 'Diograis I Leith na Gaelige' (enthusiasm towards the Irish Language) and a second award as 'Senior Student of the Year in German'. Tommy Fitzgerald was also a double winner, winning an award for excellence in Mathematics and another as 'Student of the Year in Technical Graphics'.
Laura Hynes won the Senior Creative Writing Award in English. Paula Kenny, recently a national award winner in a nationwide competition to mark the European Year of Languages, also took the title 'Senior Student of the Year in French'. Niamh Conroy won the 'Student of the Year in Humanities' award. Patricia Wright was nominated as 'Senior Student of the Year in Art', while Diarmuid Haugh showed that he had inherited his father's talent by being named 'Student of the Year in Craft Skills'. The winner of the Excellence in Home Economics Award was Martina McDermott.
The winner of the title 'Music Student of the Year' was no surprise - Tadhg Maher (picture right). Tadhg is no stranger to awards for his amazing musical talent. Two other students received a Certificate of Achievement for their outstanding accomplishments in the field of music - Sinead Middleton and Shane Treacy.
Miza Ireland were most generous in their sponsorship of the Science award. Carmel Ryan won the coveted 'Miza Perpetual Trophy for Excellence in Science'. Mr. Colin Ryan of Miza Ireland presented this award to Carmel. Roscrea Chamber of Commerce very generously sponsored the award for Business. Marguerite Dooley was named 'Business Student of the Year' and was presented with her award by Seamus Browne, President of Roscrea Chamber of Commerce.
There were many other special awards. Roscrea Credit Union, always a good friend to Colaiste Phobal, sponsored an award for Community Involvement. The worthy winner was Christine Murphy, who gives tirelessly of her time and energy helping out in the Roscrea Youth Centre. Miriam Phelan, representing Roscrea Credit Union, presented this award.
The Board of Management sponsored an award for Outstanding Achievement. This award was designed to recognise the achievements of those who have shown independence, courage and determination in completing their studies. There were two winners, Maura Kachiwile and Francisco Tango. Both students had left their homes, their families and their homeland of Tanzania to travel, on their own, to another country, another continent, to complete their education. A marvellous achievement. Mr. Dan Smyth, Chairman of the Board, presented these awards.
The Parents' Association of Colaiste Phobal sponsored the award for Outstanding Academic Achievement of which Carmel Ryan was the clear winner. She had already won the Miza Perpetual Trophy for Excellence in Science, but it was obvious that excellence extended to all her subjects.
