The Marie Keating Foundation “Mobile Unit” will visit Roscrea on Friday next the 19th of May from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The unit will be placed outside Roscrea Credit Union on Main Street, and the services the unit offers will be free and available to both men and women. The Mobile Unit will visit Roscrea as part of a “Cancer Awareness Campaign” organised by the Roscrea Credit Union “Youth Action Group”. The group which consists of Transition Year students from Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré have decided to bring the unit to Roscrea as part of their campaign to make people more aware of Cancer, its causes, and what preventative measures if possible can be taken to stop this terrible disease from happening.

A registered nurse will be available at the unit who provides information and awareness to the general public free of charge. The Unit has a welcome area where people can step on , take a seat and wait to see the Nurse. Although the unit is not a screening service, vital information will be available on the day. The Marie Keating Foundation will have charts and prosthetic teaching aids etc on board in order to educate and show and highlight the importance of being aware of your body. The Unit is equipped with take home information leaflets on Bowel, Lung, Skin, Testicular, Prostate, Cervical, Ovarian and Breast cancer. Their Nurse will talk to you one to one in a private area on the mobile unit about any concerns you have about cancer for yourself, a relative, work colleague or neighbor.
The Foundation has had “Three Mobile Cancer Information Units” in operation since May 2001, and to date the Foundation have visited over 1,874 towns, villages and corporate sites in Ireland increasing cancer awareness by providing information to over 52,509 people. Out of this number a staggering 2,836 people have been referred to their GP for further evaluation. This is a rare opportunity for people from Roscrea and surrounding areas to come to town on Friday next and seek free information in a relaxed and calm environment about any concerns they may have with regards cancer. The “Credit Union Youth Action Group” had a lot of work to do in order to make this initiative happen. Don’t waste this opportunity. The information you take from the Mobile Unit on Friday next, could help to one day save your life or the life of someone very close to you. All are welcome.
