The 39th Consecutive Roscrea Conference will take place from November 3rd – November 5th 2006. The theme of the conference will be “Building And Buildings In Medieval Ireland” and once again the conference will take place at Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea. The event regularly attracts a world wide audience and tremendous praise must be given to local historian and lecturer George Cunningham whose tireless efforts have helped ensure that the conference continues to go from strength to strength as each year passes by.

The Conference Fee represents incredible value at just €50 and (includes receptions, all lectures, coffee/tea). Full time students and unemployed €30. Part attendance is possible and local people from the Roscrea and surrounding areas are especially welcome.
The Roscrea Conferences are run by Roscrea People in association with the OPW and Roscrea Heritage Society. The conference will be opened by Tom Parlon TD Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW and highlights will include a lecture on “Restoring The Heritage Of Roscrea”, by senior Archaeologist Con Manning, a talk on Anglo-Norman Buildings by Dr Billy Colfer, historian and author as well as presentations by Danielle O’Donovan, and Frances Narkiewicz History Of Art, TCD. Field trips to Leap Castle and Gloster House also form part of the conference. Caimin O’Brien archeologist and author will talk about “The Medieval Building Heritage Of the South Midlands” and George Cunningham will sum up the conference on the Sunday in his own unique way, followed by an optional visit to Roscrea Castle Complex and Blackmills site.

Two historical/archaeological conferences are organised each year at Mount St Joseph Abbey, Roscrea: One on Early Christian Ireland on the weekend after Easter; the second held around Halloween concentrates on Medieval Ireland. The Spring Conference 2007 will take place from the 13th – 15th of April with the theme “Celebrating 40 Conferences 1987 – 2007. Also on the agenda will be “The Cistercian World at home and abroad”. |
