A large crowd gathered in the Damer Court Hotel on Wednesday last for the launch of Roscrea Hurling Club’s “A Year In The Red”. The yearly magazine which is produced by “The Juvenile Committee” is celebrating it’s fourth edition this year. Like the “Roscrea People” the magazine has established itself as a “Christmas must” such is it’s popularity.
MC for the evening was Seamus Doran who welcomed everyone to the event. In particular Seamus welcomed the sponsors of the magazine and the Club’s main sponsors Roscrea Credit Union. Seamus thanked all those who made a contribution to the magazine and he said he had no doubt that year’s edition would once again be a great success.

Seamus then called upon eighteen past servants of the club who were honoured for their contribution and dedication to hurling in Roscrea over the years. Some of the people honoured were deceased and were represented by close family members. All eighteen have featured on the “Poem Page” of the yearly magazine over the past four years. Those who received honours included Liam Carson, Jim Moloughney, Christy Maher, Timmy Bergin, Ned Treacy, Willie O’Reilly, Paddy Scully, Willie Stapleton, Jack Pyne, Pat Dynan, Seamus Doherty, Mick Hogan, Christy Hogan, Murt Deane, Jack Moloney, Willie John Wright, Bill Gleeson, & Joe Spooner.
Also on the night a DVD was shown of the 1980 County Final in which Roscrea held out for a famous one point victory over Kilruane MacDonaghs. Seamus Doran thanked Brian King and Sean Hogan for their efforts to have the match displayed in the best quality they could master for the occasion.
All hurling and sports enthusiasts from Roscrea and surrounds will want to get their hands on this years edition of “A Year In The Red”. Apart from reviewing the year at all levels in the club as well as a review of hurling in our local schools, the magazine has some wonderful articles featuring the late John Joe Maher as well as an article about 1982 the year in which Donie Kealy and Michael Scully won All-Ireland medals at minor level for Tipperary.
“A Year In The Red” has a great feature on Brendan Ryan’s celebration night in New York plus news of Darren O’Connor’s and his great success with the Tipp Minors this year. The magazine also has contributions from Club Secretary Michael Phelan and Club Chairman Bertie Fitzpatrick and this year “A Year In The Red” has news on the Club’s ambitious development plans which will be made more public in the very near future.
The magazine is a great read and is available in many local shops or from committee members. “A Year In The Red” is modestly priced at just €4.00.
