At a recent meeting of the Roscrea Fairtrade Steering Group a committee was elected to lead the promotion of the Fairtrade Mark in the town. This group is committed to the promotion of the Fairtrade brand in Roscrea with a view to Roscrea becoming one of the growing number of Fairtrade towns in Ireland.

What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is an ethical assurance that the item you have bought was supplied by someone who is a free individual, given a fair wage and who did not suffer in the production of the merchandise.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
We are now seeing more and more fairtrade products in our local shops and supermarkets, however we need to keep asking for Fairtrade products in place of those we usually buy. It is a simple, affordable way of ensuring that producers in developing countries get their fair share for the products they produce.
