The North Tipperary Dyslexia Support Group was established in April 2004 by a group of concerned parents in response to the lack of supports for children and families experiencing dyslexia in North Tipperary. The group which meets regularly, allows parents to get together and discuss their problems and offer practical advice and support to each other. The support group also organises guest speakers to talk to all interested parties on children with dyslexia.
As the group began to develop it also became apparent that practical help was needed for the children, therefore in order to try and meet this need, in September 2004 the group began holding weekly tutorials, specifically designed for children with dyslexia. The aim of the weekly tutorial is to provide children with a positive learning environment within small classes (4:1 ratio), taught by tutors with a particular interest in the area of dyslexia. At the tutorials, children receive extra tuition in English, Maths, and Computers from qualified teachers who have specific training in the area of Dyslexia/Specific Learning Difficulties. During the last term we had 32 children enrolled who were tutored by qualified teachers.
Currently the tutorials are run on Wednesday afternoon in Puckane National School and cater for children aged 6 years and upwards and we now also cater for students up to junior cert level. The number of students attending the tutorials has grown significantly over the past year with a group of 11 children travelling from the Roscrea area. With this in mind we are now starting tutorials in Roscrea on Tuesday afternoons based in Dromakeenan National School from the 23rd of September.
Enrolments are now been taken for September. For further information on any of the above, please contact Michelle on 067 24530/087 9833843.
